Milson Island Indoor Sports Stadium

Allen Jack + Cottiers award-winning sports and recreation centre, built for the NSW Department of Sport & Recreation, is located just north of Sydney on Milson Island, on the Hawkesbury River.

The brief was to design a robust multi-purpose recreation hall for children to have fun in while on residential camps. A careful study of local conditions resulted in a building that fits gracefully into the extraordinary natural context.

Allen Jack + Cottier’s innovative Milson Island Indoor Sports Stadium won 2 major industry awards in 2012 (7 awards in total), taking the top honour in the Buildings – Small Projects category at the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) Awards NSW & ACT, and the COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture at the 2012 Architecture Institute Awards NSW (AIA).

“The graceful curved roof of the hall is attuned perfectly to its island site on the Hawkesbury River.Reacting to prevailing winds, heating and cooling itself as required, separating leaves and branches, collecting and filtering rainwater, it is a shelter shaped by local conditions.”

Haron Robson provided electrical engineering, lighting design services and public address system including hearing augmentation, from masterplanning and concept design through to construction documentation, for this outstanding project.
