#AgedCareMatters: Thomas Holt Aged Care Flame Tree

The new Residential Aged Care project at Thomas Holt, Kirrawee involved in the redevelopment of the existing Seymour Shaw Court independent living units into a contemporary 7-storey, 120-bed facility to address the increasing need for aged care in the Sutherland Shire community. Valued at $30 million, the 940m2 aged care facility also offers essential amenities like a café, hairdresser, physiotherapy rooms and multipurpose spaces.

The Haron Robson team’s role was to provide our Lighting Design and Electrical Consulting Services, which includes the implementation of a cutting-edge circadian rhythm lighting system to enhance resident well-being. This involved the implementation of a distributed intelligence approach that significantly reduced the amount of cabling and space required to accommodate the services. Not only did we halve the cost of the original electrical services design, but we also reduced the overall footprint of the building, and this resulted in half a million dollars saving in structural costs.

The collaborative effort with Paynter Dixon Constructions underscores our commitment to engineering excellence, delivering quality services to support resident security, clinical monitoring, and hospitality needs. Haron Robson's contributions are a vital part of ensuring the Thomas Holt Aged Care Flame Tree facility stands as an exemplary of quality and care in the aged-care industry.

This project also won an Excellence in Aged Care award in the 2018 Urban Development Institute of Australia Award.

As of December 2025, major Australian airlines have introduced new restrictions on power banks after several in-flight fire incidents linked to lithium batteries. You can still bring a power bank onboard in your carry-on luggage, but you can’t use it during the flight or charge it using the aircraft’s power.

At lightmatters®, we spend our days thinking about how light affects how people feel, behave, and experience a space. During the holidays, we decided to explain that idea in the simplest way possible — by turning lighting design into something children can explore, colour, and play with.
